Google expands AI-driven flood forecast to all of India, BangladeshWith wreaking havocs created by floods in the regions of the South Asian countries, Google came with an Artificial Intelligence solution on Tuesday. The technology includes Artificial Intelligence-powered flood forecasting for the countries like India and Bangladesh. It will assist in determining details on the timing and water depths, creating alerts in nine new local languages.

The recently launched forecasting model by Google allows doubling of the lead time for many of its alerts, thus providing more notice to the governments of India and Bangladesh, where tens of millions of people can stay prepare a day before.

For many years, the Google Flood Forecasting Initiative is working with the governments for developing systems that could predict when and where floods can occur for creating awareness among people to take safety measures.

Google said it has been on the expansion ride for its models and services in partnership with the Indian Central Water Commission.

A statement released by the company says, “In June, just in time for the monsoon season, we reached an important milestone: our systems now extend to the whole of India, with Google technology being used to improve the targeting of every alert the government sends.” Through this technology, 200+ million people in more than 250,000 sq.km can have the benefits.

Google said, “To date, we’ve sent out around 30 million notifications to people in flood-affected areas.”

17 people died and 14 lakh people in 20 districts were affected because of floods in Odisha as said by the state government on Sunday.

Adding to the expansion in India, Google in partnership with the Bangladesh Water Development Board will bring the warnings and services from India to that country. “We currently cover more than 40 million people in Bangladesh, and we’re working to extend this to the whole country,” said Google.

While improving the alerts, Google.org has initiated a collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. “This partnership aims to build local networks that can get disaster alert information to people who wouldn’t otherwise receive smartphone alerts directly,” informed Google.
